In a recent interview with the miSHEgan podcast, Olympic swimmer and World Champion Bella Sims opened up about her time at the University of Florida and her decision to transfer to the University of Michigan. Sims, who announced her transfer in May 2025 with two years of eligibility remaining, won NCAA championship titles in both the 200 freestyle and the 500 free at the 2024 NCAA Swimming and Diving championships. She also added two runner-up finishes in 2025 in both the 100 backstroke and 200 back at NCAAs.
Sims shared her thoughts on her time at Florida, stating, "I loved it there; it was an awesome experience. But it just wasn't what I wanted. The energy that you're surrounded by is heavily contagious. When negativity surrounds you, you tend to be caught in that, and I just didn't think that was the kind of environment I wanted to be in."
Sims has already made an impact with the Michigan Wolverines, holding the fastest time in the 400 IM, the second fastest time in the 100 back, and 3rd in the 200 free following midseason invites. When asked about her favorite eating spots on campus, Sims humorously added, "Gainesville food is so bad! There is nothing in Gainesville, so coming here has been a culture shock almost."
Despite the move, Sims expressed her joy in being part of the Michigan team, stating, "This team has been such a delight to be around. I have a lot of faith in this team." She also touched on the team's approach to practice, emphasizing, "The program puts an emphasis on competing with each other and not against each other."
Sims' decision to transfer sparked a thought-provoking question: How do teams foster a positive and supportive environment while still pushing each other to excel? Do you think Sims made the right choice for her swimming career? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
