Can China's cosmetics brands rival K-beauty and refashion global markets? The answer may surprise you. While South Korea's K-beauty industry has been a global powerhouse, fueled by the popularity of K-pop, K-dramas, and the "glass skin" ideal, China is quietly making its mark. Recent data reveals that China's cosmetics exports have seen an 8.7% increase in the first 11 months of 2025, totaling US$3.99 billion. This growth is impressive, but it's the narrowing gap with South Korea's exports that's truly fascinating. South Korea's cosmetics exports reached a record US$10.3 billion over the same period, a 11.8% increase. However, China's domestic brands are making strides, with imports falling 3.4% to US$11.63 billion, indicating a shift towards local production and consumption. Chloe Zhu, a consultant at Euromonitor International, suggests that Chinese beauty brands might already surpass K-beauty in terms of absolute value and consumer reach. The key advantage lies in the scale of local demand, which provides a structural advantage that few other markets can match. So, while K-beauty has dominated the global market, China's cosmetics industry is rising, and it might just be the next big player in the beauty world.
