An extraordinary fusion of East and West takes center stage in Hong Kong—and it’s setting the art world abuzz. M+ Museum in Hong Kong has unveiled an exceptional exhibition dedicated to the Franco-Chinese printmaking maestro, Zao Wou-Ki. Known as one of the foremost figures of lyrical abstraction, Zao’s works—often commanding astounding prices at international auctions—are now being showcased in a rare, immersive display emphasizing his more experimental side. But here’s where it gets especially intriguing: the collection doesn’t just celebrate his art; it reveals his lifelong journey of identity, culture, and creative evolution.
The exhibition’s layout leads visitors through Zao’s artistic timeline, unfolding like a story. It begins with his early figurative paintings, where traces of Chinese calligraphy and traditional aesthetics surface subtly beneath modern brushstrokes. As viewers move forward, they’re met with a powerful burst of color—dynamic, abstract works inspired by nature’s raw forces: earth, wind, and water. The exhibition comes to life thanks to a remarkable act of generosity: a donation of over 200 prints and bibliographic books from Zao’s widow, Françoise Marquet-Zao. This contribution not only enriches the M+ collection but also opens new doors for appreciating Zao’s global artistic influence.
Zao Wou-Ki’s story itself reads like an artistic odyssey. Born in 1920 into an affluent banking family in China, he first encountered art through his grandfather, a calligraphy enthusiast who sparked Zao’s lifelong fascination with line and form. As a young student at the Hangzhou Fine Arts Academy, Zao became mesmerized by the works of European painters, leading him to move to Paris in 1948—a decision that forever transformed his career and perspective.
Yet, as M+ Art Director Yann Hendgen insightfully notes, Zao’s ambition went far beyond being labeled a ‘Chinese painter’ or producing decorative ‘chinoiseries.’ “He wanted to be recognized as a painter—just like Soulages,” Hendgen explains, referencing Pierre Soulages, the French master of abstract art. This statement opens a daring question: was Zao seeking to transcend national identity in art, or to redefine it entirely?
Zao’s bond with Hong Kong adds another fascinating chapter to his story. The city—where East meets West—held deep personal meaning for him. “In 1958, Zao Wou-Ki was invited to teach in Hong Kong for one semester,” recalls M+ Curator Mo Wan. “His presence left an enduring mark on the local cultural scene.” That brief return to Asia, his first since moving to Paris, rekindled his connection with Chinese heritage and catalyzed a new artistic phase. Shortly thereafter, he fully embraced abstraction, closing one chapter of his journey and boldly venturing into another.
And this is the part most people miss: Zao’s evolution wasn’t just stylistic—it was philosophical. His work stands at the crossroads of cultural duality and personal liberation, challenging the very notion of belonging in art.
