Ginkgo Bioworks, in collaboration with the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), is set to create a High-Throughput Automated Phenotyping Platform (HTP-APP). This platform, designed with Ginkgo's cutting-edge automation technology, will automate end-to-end workflows, from media preparation to multimodal analytics.

The key to this project's success lies in its modularity. Ginkgo's Reconfigurable Automation Carts (RACs) and dynamic Catalyst scheduling software will enable PNNL to adapt and scale the platform as scientific needs evolve. This flexibility is crucial for staying ahead in the rapidly advancing field of biotechnology.

The Microbial Molecular Phenotyping Capability (M2PC) aims to deliver a predictive understanding of complex biological systems relevant to the Department of Energy's (DOE) mission. The planned platform will increase throughput and reproducibility of phenotyping campaigns, capture multimodal data for AI/ML, and provide a sustainable foundation for future advancements at PNNL's EMSL.

The modularity and expandability of the platform are its standout features. RAC-based hardware can be reconfigured or scaled, and software "digital twin" tools help model throughput and identify bottlenecks. This ensures the platform remains adaptable and future-proof.

The HTP-APP covers end-to-end workflows, from media preparation and cultivation to sample preparation and multimodal analytics. It's designed to generate high-quality, multimodal data, supporting remote planning and execution, and laboratory integration.

Ginkgo Bioworks offers a range of solutions, from R&D packages for therapeutics and diagnostics to modular laboratory automation and large lab data sets for AI models. Ginkgo Biosecurity is also building infrastructure to predict and respond to biological threats.
