An innovative organization from Great Bookham is in the running for a £10,000 community prize, which could significantly boost their efforts to bring joy to children's lives. Together for Cinema, a community-focused organization based in Surrey, has been shortlisted in a national competition. The group, founded by Ian Morrish, has already installed 58 home cinema rooms in children's hospices and other locations across the UK, providing a much-needed respite and entertainment for those facing serious health challenges.
Mr. Morrish, moved by a TV program featuring a holiday home for children with short lives, took action. He contacted the audio/visual industry to explore ways to help, and Together for Cinema was born. The organization, which gained community interest company (CIC) status in 2023, has since brought the magic of cinema to children's hospices, creating a safe and enjoyable environment for both patients and their families.
The impact of their work is profound. Mr. Morrish shares, "Seeing the delight on kids' faces is truly amazing." The organization's efforts have already installed 58 cinema rooms, a project that would have cost over £1.5 million. These rooms have been set up in various locations, including the Christopher's Shooting Star Children's Hospices in Guildford, the White Lodge Centre in Chertsey, and Cherry Trees in East Clandon, Surrey.
The Selco Community Heroes campaign, now in its fifth year, offers a unique opportunity for charities and community groups. It provides both donated building materials and financial support, with prizes of £5,000, £2,500, and the grand prize of £10,000. For Together for Cinema, the top prize would be a game-changer. Mr. Morrish explains, "It would allow us to add those finishing touches that make a real difference, like twinkly lights on the ceiling and extra acoustic paneling."
With seven installations planned for next year, the additional funding would be crucial. The team believes that these "last touches" will significantly enhance the overall experience. The winner of the public vote will be announced in January, and the organization eagerly awaits the outcome, hoping to secure the prize that will further their mission to bring joy and comfort to children and families facing difficult circumstances.
