The IHSA's Bold Move: Expanding Football Playoffs and Shaping the Future of High School Sports
In a move that has sparked debate and divided opinions, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has announced a significant expansion of its state football playoffs, welcoming an additional 128 teams to the competition. But here's where it gets controversial: this decision has not only increased the number of participating teams but also shifted the start of the season one week earlier, eliminating the traditional Week 0 scrimmage.
The IHSA's schools have voted to add 16 teams to each of the eight playoff classes, resulting in a total of 48 teams per class next season. This expansion means that the top 16 teams in each class will now receive a bye in the first round of the playoffs, a privilege previously enjoyed by only the top 32 teams.
The vote passed with a substantial majority, with 377 schools in favor, 252 against, and 96 schools remaining neutral. Despite the controversy, the first day of football practice will remain unchanged, kicking off on August 10, 2026.
IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson expressed his hopes for this expansion, stating, "We aim to bring stability to our schools by addressing the challenges of conference movement and scheduling football games. While there may be short-term complications, we believe this will lead to long-term benefits for football and other sports."
Local football coaches are divided on this decision, with some welcoming the opportunity for more teams to participate and others expressing concerns about potential risks and the dilution of playoff exclusivity.
"I support more football and practice for the kids," said Jordan Lynch, coach of Mount Carmel. "However, we must consider injury risks. Some teams with only three wins are not competitive, and the first round often sees blowouts. I'd prefer reducing the classes to seven instead of including all these teams."
Lynch highlights the scheduling benefits of moving the season start, aligning Illinois' schedule with neighboring states like Indiana and Michigan.
Chris James, coach of Morgan Park, sees the expansion positively, stating, "It's a good idea. We'll see more private schools move up to bigger classes, and we're ready to compete against anyone."
The expansion is likely to ensure that all football teams with three or four wins in the nine-game regular season make the playoffs, whereas previously, only teams with five wins and some with four wins qualified. In contrast, every team advances to the playoffs in all other IHSA sports.
Sheamus Murphy, coach of Sandburg, brings a unique perspective, having built a program from scratch at Back of the Yards. He shares, "I'm not a big fan of the expansion. The football playoffs were special because of the qualification criteria, which created a sense of achievement for schools and communities. But I understand the relief it brings from the pressure of chasing five wins."
