Ilia Topuria's reign as UFC lightweight champion was thrown into uncertainty recently, but it looks like fans won't have to wait too long to see him back in action. The question on everyone's mind: When will "El Matador" return to the Octagon? According to a recent social media announcement, Topuria intends to defend his title sometime in early spring or summer of 2026, specifically aiming for a timeframe between April and June. But here's where it gets controversial... he's already named his preferred opponent, and it involves an interim title fight that he didn't even request!
According to ESPN MMA reporter Brett Okamoto, who has been covering MMA and boxing since 2010 and has interviewed some of the biggest names in combat sports, including Dana White, Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, Topuria (17-0) had stepped away from the sport late last year to address personal matters. These included what he described as "false allegations of domestic abuse" and a custody matter in family court in Spain with his ex-wife, Giorgina Uzcategui. This unexpected hiatus understandably left the lightweight division in a holding pattern.
In Topuria's absence, the UFC decided to create an interim lightweight title fight. This interim belt will be contested between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324 in Las Vegas next weekend. And this is the part most people miss... interim titles are usually created when a champion is injured or has a very long-term absence planned. Topuria's absence, while concerning, wasn't presented as long-term at first. Creating an interim title could be seen as a way to keep the division moving, but it also adds a layer of complexity and perhaps even a little bit of drama, don't you think?
Topuria himself has made it clear who he wants next. In his social media post, he stated explicitly, "April-June. The winner between Paddy and Justin." So, it seems he's already eyeing the winner of the interim title bout as his next challenger. This sets the stage for a potentially explosive return for Topuria, who became a two-weight champion last June by knocking out former champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 317.
It's interesting to note that Topuria, who is 28 years old, has also expressed interest in eventually moving up to welterweight to challenge former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. However, it's widely believed that he would need to defend his lightweight title at least once before making such a significant jump in weight class. That being said, the prospect of Topuria facing Makhachev down the line is definitely something that excites many fans and analysts.
So, what are your thoughts on all of this? Was it right for the UFC to create an interim title so quickly? Should Topuria focus on defending his title against the interim champion, or should he pursue his ambition of moving up to welterweight sooner rather than later?
