Judge's Captaincy: Team USA's Star Prepares for WBC (2026)

Judge Relishes Captaincy in the WBC: A Reflection of Sacrifice and Pride

PHOENIX — Aaron Judge, the three-time American League MVP, is gearing up for the World Baseball Classic (WBC) as the captain of Team USA. The tournament, set to begin on Thursday, March 14, carries special significance for Judge, especially amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East following the U.S.-Israel joint strikes on Iran.

In a recent interview, Judge expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country, reflecting on the sacrifices made by those who have served in the military. He emphasized the importance of the Team USA jersey, considering the individuals who have put their lives on the line to ensure his family's safety.

This will be Judge's first experience as a captain in the WBC, although several other players on the roster have participated in previous tournaments. The seven-time All-Star is eager to take advantage of the opportunity to bond with his teammates and make the most of the experience.

The WBC, dating back to its inaugural edition in 2006, has seen Japan emerge as a dominant force, winning three times (2006, 2009, and 2023). The U.S. secured its lone title in 2017, and this year's tournament promises to be another exciting competition.

Team USA's first game is scheduled against Brazil in Houston on Friday, March 15. The tournament will feature four groups of five teams, with the U.S. playing in Pool B, hosting four games over five days against Mexico, Italy, Great Britain, and Brazil. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, where a single-elimination format will determine the champions.

The U.S. team boasts a talented pitching staff, including last year's Cy Young Award winners, Tarik Skubal and Paul Skenes. Skubal, who played for the Air Force Academy before transferring to LSU, expressed his desire to represent his country, a sentiment shared by other players like U.S. reliever Griffin Jax, who also played for Air Force.

The starting lineup is expected to be powerful, led by veteran sluggers Bryce Harper, Judge, and Kyle Schwarber. The team also features young talent like center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. Mark DeRosa, the U.S. manager, returns after leading the team to a second-place finish in 2023, with a strong coaching staff supporting him.
