Mo Dioubate’s resilience was pivotal in Kentucky's thrilling comeback victory over Tennessee.
In recent weeks, as Kentucky has been trying to define its identity on the court, it seemed like Mo Dioubate might be losing his place in the lineup. In their previous victories against Mississippi State and LSU, he averaged only two points in about 12.5 minutes of play, with Andrija Jelavic taking over his starting position during the game in Baton Rouge. However, Jelavic retained his starting role against Tennessee, while Dioubate came off the bench, ultimately playing a crucial part in the Wildcats' impressive turnaround from a 17-point deficit to an 80-78 win—marking one of the season's most significant triumphs.
In this game, Dioubate contributed 10 points and secured a team-leading six rebounds, showcasing his impact, particularly in the second half, where he scored eight of his points. Although he shot 4 for 11 from the field, his overall contribution made a noticeable difference, leading the team with a plus/minus rating of +16. Initially, Kentucky struggled to match Tennessee's physical gameplay, with Jaylen Carey dominating the matchup against Malachi Moreno. That’s where Dioubate stepped in, injecting the team with the toughness they desperately needed on both ends of the court, including four offensive rebounds.
"Mo Dioubate, man," Mark Pope expressed at the postgame press conference, visibly emotional. "I can't articulate how proud I am of him. Tonight, he truly embraced who he is, striving for the greatness that is Mo Dioubate. Throughout the year, we’ve discussed the importance of self-love and appreciating what one brings to the table; it creates something special and magical in this game. He was phenomenal tonight, and his effect on the game exceeded the statistics."
After the game, Dioubate joined Goose Givens on the radio show, sharing insights about his recent experiences, particularly his journey from not being in the starting lineup to focusing on helping his team secure victories.
"Being a team player is essential," he stated. "Adversity is a part of playing at any level, but you must prioritize what benefits your team. Focus on excelling at what you do best, and more opportunities will arise. Just contribute whatever you can to help your team win, and everything else will fall into place."
Dioubate wasn’t the only player stepping up in Knoxville. Jasper Johnson played a critical role at point guard during the first half. After a slow start, Malachi Moreno showed increased physicality in the second half, partly due to encouragement from Dioubate.
"I spoke to Malachi at halftime, telling him he’s capable of much more than he was showing," Dioubate shared. "We understood Tennessee’s style—they play tough, so we had to match and exceed their intensity. I aimed to energize the guys, and we found our rhythm in the second half. We knew what was at stake."
The victory against LSU had already kept Kentucky's season on track, but the win over Tennessee could prove even more significant, enhancing their NCAA Tournament prospects as a Quad 1A victory. Looking ahead, Kentucky is set to return home for matches against Texas and Ole Miss, both of which are seen as winnable. Dioubate recognizes the necessity of bringing the momentum gained in Knoxville back to Lexington.
"Wins like this are incredibly significant for us. These games are typically harder to win than those at home, and they help strengthen our unity as a team. There are challenging moments during the games when doubts creep in, and we wonder if we can pull it off. Yet, we all share the same mindset. We refused to give up, played collaboratively, and remained connected throughout, boosting our confidence and reinforcing our determination."
While Kentucky still has aspects to refine, particularly concerning those early first-half deficits, Dioubate’s acceptance of his role marks a vital progression. Perhaps this is why Mark Pope likened him to Steph Curry in a chat with Tom Leach.
"Mo’s toughness is an invaluable asset," Pope noted. "It’s akin to how Steph Curry possesses an unparalleled shooting ability. Dioubate’s toughness makes him stand out; when he fully embraces it, he alters the game's dynamic. And he certainly did that for us tonight."
