Oliver Bearman's Emotional Realization: The New F1 Power Units and Their Impact
Oliver Bearman, a seasoned F1 driver, recently expressed his 'sad' realization about the new power units in testing. The 2026 units boast three times the electrical energy of their 2025 counterparts, reaching up to 350kW compared to 120kW. However, this increased energy is now derived from batteries, which provide a higher share of the engine's total power output.
The new power units feature a 50-50 split between internal combustion engines and batteries. Bearman, during his time at the Barcelona test, completed 148 laps out of Haas's 387, getting a first-hand experience with the customer Ferrari power unit. His initial takeaways revealed a complex relationship with the new regulations.
'Barcelona, being an energy-demanding track, made the new regulations a bit more challenging,' Bearman shared. The track's lack of braking zones and high energy demands made it difficult to harness the necessary energy. Despite this, Bearman noted the car's lighter weight and improved agility, even with its impressive downforce capabilities.
'We've had some of the most downforce-heavy cars in history, so the new regulations were a step back, but still impressive,' he said. The initial launch car in Barcelona was just the beginning, and Bearman acknowledged that there's a long way to go in optimizing downforce.
The 'most annoying' aspect, according to Bearman, was the energy management. The increased reliance on electrical power and the associated clipping and management were a significant adjustment. 'It's more than we're used to, but it's expected given the new power unit's design,' he added.
Bearman's 'sad' realization highlights the emotional impact of adapting to new technologies in F1. As the sport continues to evolve, drivers like Bearman must navigate the challenges and surprises that come with each new season.
