In a remarkable achievement for American hockey, Patrick Kane of the Detroit Red Wings has officially matched Mike Modano’s record as the highest-scoring player born in the United States in the history of the NHL.
Kane reached this milestone by notching his 1,374th career point with an assist on a goal scored by Alex DeBrincat during a game against the Los Angeles Kings, which unfortunately ended in a 3-1 defeat for the Red Wings. This accomplishment comes just a few months after Kane celebrated his 37th birthday, whereas Modano was 40 years old when he also achieved his 1,374th point.
"Things didn’t go our way tonight, so it’s hard to focus on the record right now," Kane reflected after the game. "But I’m hopeful that our next match will yield better results, and I can surpass Mike's record then. That would be a great moment for me, especially if it coincides with a victory."
Kane will have the opportunity to break the tie with Modano when the Red Wings face off against the Washington Capitals in their upcoming game on Thursday.
Since being selected first overall in the 2007 NHL Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, Kane has become one of the prominent figures in American hockey. His contributions were pivotal in leading the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup championships between 2010 and 2015, marking one of the most successful eras in the league since the implementation of the salary cap in 2005.
Earlier this month, Kane also made headlines by becoming the 50th player in NHL history, and only the fifth American, to reach the milestone of 500 career goals, joining the ranks of legends such as Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick, and Joe Mullen. It’s worth noting that Brett Hull, although he had dual citizenship, was born in Canada and played for the U.S. internationally, finishing his career with 741 goals and 1,391 points.
Looking back at his accolades, Kane won the Calder Trophy as the rookie of the year in 2007-08, claimed the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2013, and was awarded the Hart Trophy for regular-season MVP in 2015-16, a season where he also led the league in scoring.
As it stands, Kane’s impressive career stats include 1,374 points comprising 500 goals and 874 assists over 1,341 regular-season games in the NHL. In comparison, Modano retired in 2011 with a total of 561 goals and 813 assists across 1,499 games.
