After a long-awaited nine months of anticipation, Specialized has finally unveiled its highly anticipated tubeless cotton tires, a game-changer in the cycling world. But here's where it gets controversial...
Specialized's new Cotton TLR tires offer a unique blend of traditional cotton sidewalls and modern tubeless technology. This innovation has been a long time coming, with early prototypes spotted as far back as 2025.
The original Turbo Cotton tires, available in 24, 26, and 28mm sizes, have been a staple in Specialized's lineup for years. However, the brand has now expanded its offering with the 'Turbo Cotton Folding Racing Only' tire, a 320TPI model with a cotton casing, and the new Cotton TLR, which comes in 38, 30, and 32mm sizes.
The Cotton TLR tires are a response to the demand for a tubeless option with the performance characteristics of the cotton-sided models but in larger sizes. These tires feature a polyester core with a cotton wrap, designed to contain tubeless sealant effectively.
Specialized claims that these new tires combine the feel of cotton with the speed and precision of modern tubeless technology. An intriguing detail is that the brand initially produced only six pairs of these tires, but Bora Hansgrohe's refusal to part with them led to full-scale production.
What's more, at the Opening Weekend event, a clear sealant applied to the outside of the Cotton tires at Red Bull Bora caught my attention. The team mechanic described it as a protective measure, but we're digging deeper to uncover more details.
The Cotton TLR tires use a 320 TPI construction and the Specialized Gripton T2/T5 compound, ensuring a seamless tubeless setup. Specialized launched five new tires just under a year ago, including the S-Works Turbo TLR, which shares the same compound but with a 120 TPI casing.
And this is the part most people miss: the brand also states that these tires are manufactured to ISO standards, ensuring consistent quality and performance.
So, there you have it - Specialized's new tubeless cotton tires are here, offering a unique blend of tradition and innovation. But what do you think? Are these tires a step forward for cycling technology, or just a clever marketing move? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
