After 50 years of roaring engines and unwavering support, the Manx Grand Prix Supporters Club is facing a crossroads. Is it finally time to hang up the helmet? This is the question on everyone's mind as the club prepares to vote on its future.
Founded in 1975, the club initially focused on a crucial mission: fundraising for an air ambulance helicopter to aid injured riders in the Isle of Man's thrilling, yet dangerous, road races. Over the years, the club expanded its support, becoming a lifeline for the racing community. They raised over £1.2 million for various causes.
But here's where it gets controversial... The club's chairman, Allan Brew, a man deeply connected to the racing world, having started motorbike racing in 1976, has announced a members meeting on February 26th to decide whether to dissolve the club.
So, what led to this pivotal moment? The club's decision to stop fundraising for the helicopter in 2022, coupled with a lack of fresh, younger members, seems to be the main issue. Brew, now 68, reflects on a lifetime intertwined with the club. "It's always been a part of my life, and in my blood," he says, recalling his father's racing team and his own 40-year career in motorcycling.
But this is not the end of the story. The government's decision to fund the rescue helicopter in 2022 shifted the club's focus. Brew stated, "The government said it felt we should spend our money on something else." This change prompted the club to re-evaluate its purpose. The executive committee voted 5-1 to hold a vote on dissolving the club. Brew reflects, "Maybe it's time, after celebrating the 50th anniversary of the club last year, to draw a line under it, stand down, and finish the club." If the club dissolves, its funds will be donated to the Manx Grand Prix Benevolent Fund, which supports injured riders.
And this is the part most people miss... The club currently has over 400 members, some living across the globe. The absence of new, younger members is a significant concern for the club's long-term sustainability.
